Worlds Largest Level III Mega Event

Meet the Fliers

Vince Catalano's Extreme

Vince is with Tripoli Las Vegas and has been Level III for almost 2 years. He flew "Extreme" at ROC Stock last June on a full L. Vince has previously flown this rocket with M1939 and M1419 motors. After the World's Largest Level III Mega Event he will be retireing Extreme to a place of honor at his local hobby shop.
Extreme stands 120-Inches tall and is 5.5-Inches in dia. She weighs in at 34 lbs. with a baby M motor. Should be quite a performer.

John Coker's OTRAG 28% Scale model

"I wanted to try my hand at clustering and after looking over the same old rockets again, I discovered something new". The OTRAG was Germany's only solo rocket venture and it was ultimately unsuccessful. However, it was a very unusual looking rocket and would make a great model for clustering with its main body of four tubes.

Four M1315s would give this rocket 26,753Ns (6012lbs.) of total impulse, yet it would stay fairly low to the ground being essentialy a 9" rocket. It could even be flown in California on four L1120s for 19,882Ns (4468lbs.) of total impulse. (The maximum engine class for California is "M" and the limit for clusters in an "N".)

"I'm having problems with my project, though. Even with a 9" body, I
can't keep the altitude low enough. I asked Rick if we could get a higher
waiver for the event. I won't know exactly until I get the final weight,
but RockSim predicts 17,000+ plus. Sigh. I wonder if we have any chance of
20k' for this day?"

Kurt Gugisberg & Big Purple

Big Purple has now grown to 11' 6" tall by 6" diameter with the addition of the video camara section. It has a single 75mm motor mount and is capable of using any of the 75mm motors. The four fins are 1/8" G-10 fiberglass, the airframe is fiberglassed flexible phenolic. It uses two Blacksky Altaccs for revcovery. It was originally rigged for dual deployment (and can be converted back to that with the removal of the camera section) and is now set only for apogee deployment so that it can get the longest hang time for the camera taping. The video system is so aligned as to stay in the right-side-up position throughout the entire flight. The three chute system (custom made by Pricilla's Chutes) is designed to stabalize the rocket body to prevent spinning during decent. "Did I mention that it is purple?"

Kelly Smith & 1/2 Scale Patriot Missile

"I have always loved scale models and my entry will be no exception". Kelly's Mega Event Entry is a scratch built 1/2 Scale Patriot Missile. This 9.5-Inch baby is 10 Feet Four and weighs in at about 54 Lbs fully loaded.
It will Take to the skies on an Aerotech M1419 central motor airstarting four J350 motors 2 seconds after main burnout. It will be gently lowered to the dry lakebed on a Purple Rocket Man R19 Parachute. Kelly will be using Olsen Altimeters with Pratt RC for back-up recovery and second stage ignition.

John Eric Thompson & his 1/2 scale Phoenix

"I have been in the hobby ever since 1976. I Love this stuff".
John flies once a month at Ocotillo with Kevin Harnes of Tripoli San Diego.

John's Phoenix will be flying either on an M1419, or an M2400T.
The Phoenix is:
8 inches Diameter:
height: 100 inches
weight: 51 lbs.
expected altitude: 5,280 feet on M1419
This rocket features Blacksky Altacc avionics with a Pyro II release mechanism for drogue to main deployment.
